Updates to Flood Insurance and Regulations

Barnstable County, Regional Government of Cape Cod
Shannon Hulst, Floodplain Specialist for Barnstable County, Cape Cod Cooperative Extension and Woods Hole Sea Grant, will give an overview of updates to flood insurance and regulations. Shannon’s talk will start with a brief context of the reason for floodplain management, which will be followed by a simple explanation of recent changes to how flood insurance is rated by the National Flood Insurance Program. Shannon will spend a little more time discussing how certain building decisions can affect insurance rates, and then discuss regulations. There will be a reminder of basic regulations, discussion of floodplain regulations included in the pending 10th edition of the MA Building Code, and review of common floodplain building issues that have arisen in several Cape Cod towns.
